Arsenal best placed to sign midfield star

Arsenal have been in superb form of late.

Following a run of two straight defeats against Manchester City and Brighton, Mikel Arteta’s side have bounced back to win three on the trot.

Impressive resilience was shown against Sheffield United before the Gunners swept aside Norwich in dominant fashion.

However, the north Londoners now face a period of tough matches which starts with Wolves on Saturday evening.

What follows that is games against Spurs, Leicester and Liverpool – far from easy.

Arsenal’s record away from home in matches against the best sides in the country is rather disastrous, failing to win in their last 25 outings against the top six.

That is a damning statistic but it could be solved by some strong activity in the transfer market.

One of the Gunners’ long-term targets has been Atletico star Thomas Partey.

Numerous reports have been shared about the midfielder but it feels like he’s edging ever close to finally signing for Arsenal.

Reports from Spain earlier this week suggested the Gunners were willing to pay his release clause of £43m before reliable journalist David Ornstein revealed they were intensifying their interest in the Ghana international.

Though, fresh claims from AS now reveal that Arsenal are ‘best placed’ to sign the 27-year-old.

However, they’ll have to beat away competition from Napoli.

GIVEMESPORT’S Matt Dawson says…

This saga has been rather tedious and it remains to be seen whether Partey actually joins or not.

At one stage, it looked like Barcelona would steal in and prise him away from Madrid instead.

Though, with the Gunners now in pole position, they look set to finally land their man.

Partey would be a stellar addition to the Arsenal midfield and is an absolute must this summer, especially if Matteo Guendouzi departs.

Arteta’s side lacks grit and aggression in the middle of the park, something that’s been missing ever since the days of Patrick Vieira and Emmanuel Petit.

Though, in the form of the Ghanian, they’d finally have someone worthy of beefing up proceedings.

Arsenal have a plethora of midfielder’s in their armoury, but arguably, none are capable of bullying the opponent.

Lucas Torreira is a nippy player who can break up the play on a regular basis, but standing at such a diminutive height, is hardly someone that’s going to scare opponents.

Partey, on the other hand, who stands at 6 foot and produces 2.4 tackles per game, would certainly do that.

Arsenal must do everything they can to bring him to the club.
