Tottenham Hotspur will surely need to strengthen their squad this summer.

They have been struggling this season and are unlikely to be qualifying for any form of European competition in 2019/20.

Spurs are currently ninth, 10 points behind fifth-placed Manchester United and 12 off fourth-placed Chelsea.

With just six games of their season remaining, they face a major uphill battle to have any chance of qualifying for the Champions League or the Europa League.

With Jan Vertonghen set to depart the club on a free transfer when his contract expires, it makes sense that Spurs would be looking to bring in a new defender in the coming months.

And The Sun reports that they hold an interest in another Premier League defender as the summer transfer window looms.

They are said to hold an interest in signing Ben Godfrey from Norwich City, but they will face competition.

Both Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig are keeping tabs on the England U21 international, who is likely to endure relegation from the top-flight this season.

The Canaries have taken just 21 points from 33 games, winning just five matches, and are seven points from safety.

Godfrey is valued at £25 million and the 22-year-old could be one of the players snaffled away from the club if they do drop through the trapdoor.

GIVEMESPORT’S Harry Sherlock says…

Godfrey is exactly the type of defender that Spurs should be looking to sign, particularly with Vertonghen's exit looming.

He is young, talented, and has a high ceiling, despite toiling in a team that are seriously struggling this season.

Per WhoScored, he averages 0.8 tackles per game, 0.8 interceptions, just 0.4 fouls, and 4.6 clearances, while his passing accuracy of 88.5% is remarkable.

Norwich boss Daniel Farke has previously talked up just how good Godfrey is, insisting that it is only natural that clubs are interested in luring the defender away from Carrow Road.

Per The Pinkun, he said: “It’s quite normal when you are doing quite well and he, without any doubt, has done fantastically during the last year and when there is a young player with such potential, that you have to handle some rumours.”

If Spurs can beat their rivals to the punch, this would be an astute signing.
