Sergio Ramos scored yet another vital goal in Real Madrid's campaign for the La Liga title.

Los Blancos achieved what so many of their rivals have failed to do this season by taking three points from the San Mamés Stadium in a 1-0 win over Athletic Bilbao.

However, it wasn't without controversy as Real's winner once again came from the penalty spot, unsurprisingly inspiring tweets and protests that VAR favours the side from the Bernabeu.

It certainly wasn't helped by the fact Ramos - who scored the spot kick in question - became embroiled in VAR controversy of his own minutes later after an apparent stamp on Raul Garcia.

Nevertheless, Athletic couldn't find an equaliser either through conventional means or by some technological help, allowing Real to move seven points clear for a few hours.

Ramos scores another Real winner

But it also meant that Ramos claimed all the headlines once again, having already done so just three days prior by scoring another winner from 12 yards at home to Getafe.

It really makes you wonder whether Ramos would actually make it in a world-class side as a striker as opposed to a defender and the statistics do little in the way of refuting that fact.

So, in light of Ramos coming up trumps for the umpteenth time in Real colours, we decided to reflect on all the many records he's managed to amass that seem mind-boggling for a centre-back.

Ramos' insane statistics

Here are some of the crazy facts that - believe it or not - are 100% true about arguably the greatest defender-forward hybrid to play the beautiful game:

- Highest ever goal-scoring season of his career in the league (10) and all competitions (12)

- The highest-scoring defender in La Liga history (71)

- Real Madrid's second top goalscorer this season (12)

- 22 consecutive penalties scored for Real Madrid and Spain

- As many free-kick goals as Cristiano Ronaldo this season (1)

- More La Liga goals (71) in his career than Zinedine Zidane (37), Xavi (58), Andres Iniesta (35), Luis Figo (68), Ronaldinho (70) and Neymar (68)

- More league goals (10) this season than Roberto Firmino (8), Antoine Griezmann (9), Alexandre Lacazette (8) and Diego Costa (4)

- More goals (5) since the return from lockdown than Lionel Messi (3) and Cristiano Ronaldo (4)

Yeh... it's not bad for a centre-back, is it?

Ramos will rightfully go down as not just one of the best defenders to play the game, but one of the finest footballers in general and his contributions in attack for Real will only solidify that fact.

That being said, he still has a long to go to overtake Ronald Koeman as the highest-scoring defender in the sport's history but, then again, 253 is a pretty bonkers total.

Don't be surprised if Ramos gives it his all, though, because that's exactly the nature of the man.
