It's shaping up to be a big summer for Liverpool.

After winning the Premier League title Jurgen Klopp's side will face the prospect of entering the summer transfer market as reigning champions.

While the temptation may be there to avoid spending much money, it could be key to continue improving if they're to retain their title next term.

The chasing pack will undoubtedly be strengthening this summer and so it could be key for Liverpool to strike while the iron is hot and improve their team from a winning position.

Only the best players will be good enough to fit into Klopp's side, and their latest target certainly fits into that category.

Thiago Alcantara has proven himself as one of Europe' top midfielders after establishing himself at Bayern Munich.

However with just one year left on his contract, speculation has surfaced linking him with a move away.

According to reports, Liverpool are the favourites to sign Thiago Alcantara.

It had been suggested last week that the Reds had already agreed terms with the player, however those suggestions are thought to be premature.

Bayern's president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has confirmed that they may have to sell the midfielder this summer, while Jurgen Klopp was quick to praise the player when quizzed.

However the Evening Standard have suggested that Thiago is not a top target for the Reds who may focus their attention elsewhere.

They wrote: "Liverpool continue to privately distance themselves from a move, insisting Klopp is well stocked in the centre of midfield.

"Thiago’s age and fitness record also do not make him an obvious target for the Reds, who have tended to target younger and more robust players under FSG.

"But, while club insiders expect another quiet summer at Anfield, they admit that could change in the event of departures.

"It remains to be seen whether Klopp would be able to resist signing a player he has long admired for a bargain fee should a vacancy in midfield appear."

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

What a signing this would be.

While Liverpool may be putting their focus elsewhere, there's no doubting that Thiago Alcantara would add to Jurgen Klopp's side.

It seems that he'll be moving on this summer, but whether that switch sees him heading to Anfield is up for debate.

It is a deal that could happen, but you'd imagine that if he was to join then Liverpool would need to offload one of their other midfield options.

I can't see that happening so I'd expect him to move elsewhere.
