It's set to be an exciting summer for Newcastle United supporters.

While the Premier League are yet to make a decision on the proposed takeover of the club from Amanda Staveley and the Saudi-backed consortium for a sum of £300m, that won't stop them making preparations for the transfer market.

Victory over Bournemouth on Wednesday night was followed up by a 2-2 draw against West Ham United which secured survival in the Premier League, meaning that plans can be made for next season.

Steve Bruce will be keen to use the remaining games of this season to finish the season as high as possible, with a finish in the top 10 a realistic possibility.

If Newcastle are to do that then they'll need as many players fit as possible.

Unfortunately that won't be the case going into the clash with Manchester City with five players set to be ruled out.

Miguel Almiron, Andy Carroll and Allan Saint Maximin are doubts for the trip to the Etihad Stadium, while Sean Longstaff and Isaac Hayden are also ruled out with hamstring injuries.

Discussing the injuries, Bruce told Chronicle Live: "Almiron and Saint-Maximin are struggling.

"Andy Carroll has a strain.

Bruce added: "When we’re approaching the fifth and sixth game, then obviously it’s going to take its toll.

“Isaac and Sean Longstaff are possibly our fittest players and unfortunately they have picked up soft tissue injuries, so we’ve got a few problems.”

It is a far cry from the situation Bruce had a fortnight ago when he had virtually a full squad to select from on the return to action.

He said: “Yes, and I have to tell you it’s better having those options, to have too many. To be fair, that’s why we have the squads that we have.

“The subs – some people have been against it and some people are for it – I’ve been all for it.

“The demand on the players has been totally difficult, if I am being brutally honest, with the preparation time that we were given.

“But everybody has been in the same boat and I think we all understand that we’re going to pick up a lot of injuries along the way just because of the intensity the Premier League demands.”

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

While none of the injuries are ideal, Allan Saint-Maximin's knock is a real blow.

The winger has proven himself to be the club's best player so far this term and to have him missing will be huge for Steve Bruce's side.

That said, leaving him out against Manchester City could make sense.

With City sure-fire favourites for that clash, resting him means that he's more likely to be fit for the rest of Newcastle's fixtures - matches that they're much more likely to pick up points from.

If he can come back rested and revitalised then it could be massive in helping Steve Bruce guide the Magpies to a top half finish.
