Six-time Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton has revealed that his bulldog Roscoe has recently joined him in becoming "fully vegan".

Hamilton switched to a vegan diet himself in 2017, citing animal cruelty and pollution as his reasons for making the change. The Brit has claimed that it has helped him to live a healthier life, and now believes that his bulldog is feeling the same benefits as well.

Writing on Instagram, Hamilton said: "Hey guys, so Roscoe is now fully vegan. Since he has gone vegan, his coat is much softer, his swollen paws have healed up, he is no longer limping with pain of arthritis and his breathing has opened up.

"Super happy with the results and he is too."

Hamilton's other bulldog Coco passed away last month at the age of six due to a suspected heart attack, but Hamilton is clearly delighted with the current shape that his remaining dog is in.

However, there remain concerns over the suitability of providing a vegan diet to household pets.

The president of the British Veterinary Association (BVA), Daniella Dos Santos admitted to BBC Future: "Cats are obligate carnivores, and they require certain amounts of amino acids to be healthy, and the lack of these can lead to health problems. For that reason, you wouldn't advise a vegetarian diet, let alone a vegan one.

"It is theoretically possible to feed a dog a vegetarian diet, but it's much easier to get it wrong than to get it right. You would have to do it under the supervision of a veterinary-trained nutritionist."

It is currently unclear as to whether Hamilton has been heeding the advice of a nutritionist, but he appears adamant that his dog's health has notably improved so far.

The 35-year-old will hope that remains the case as he pushes for a record-equalling seventh Formula 1 Championship in 2020.
