Manchester United awarded controversial Bruno Fernandes penalty vs Aston Villa

  • Rob Swan

Relegation-threatened Aston Villa were in desperate need of all three points against Manchester United on Thursday evening.

They went close through Jack Grealish early on at Villa Park, but it was Bruno Fernandes who put the in-form visitors ahead in the 27th minute thanks to a hugely controversial penalty.

Referee Jon Moss pointed to the spot after Fernandes was fouled just inside the box by Ezri Konsa, but many football fans believe the decision was extremely harsh on the Villa defender.

VAR reviewed the incident and, to the surprise of many, agreed that a penalty was the right decision.

You can see why many people are baffled by the decision.

Fernandes span and landed on Konsa’s leg, so how United were awarded the penalty in that situation is anyone’s guess.

Aston Villa posted the following tweet…

And even Man Utd legend Peter Schmeichel, who played for both clubs, couldn’t believe the penalty had been awarded…

Incidentally, this was penalty number 13 for Man Utd this season - no team has even been awarded more in a Premier League season.

‘Penalty FC’ were the top trend in the United Kingdom shortly afterwards.

Man Utd then made it 2-0 shortly before half-time thanks to another beautiful Mason Greenwood strike.
