Rangers’ summer business is important.

Steven Gerrard’s men did not manage to overhaul Celtic in the 2019/20 season and they ended the season, after the COVID-19 curtailment, in second-place.

They are quite comfortably the second best team in Scotland, finishing 21 points ahead of third-placed Motherwell.

But they were also 13 points behind leaders Celtic and, so, they need to take steps to right the ship and close the gap.

It is remarkable that a team that lost just four games all season were so far behind the eventual champions but that is the reality north of the border.

It seems as though Kemar Roofe had been identified as a target but that deal has now been thrown into doubt.

The Sun reported earlier in July that Gerrard’s side had identified the former Leeds United man as a possible target.

The 27-year-old moved to Anderlecht in the summer, and has scored seven goals and registered three assists in 16 games, having spent three years with Leeds United, in which he netted 33 goals across 122 games.

Roofe, though, seems puzzled by reports of interest from Rangers.

Speaking to Het Nieuwsblad, via Sport Witness, he said he had never had a conversation with the Scottish club.

He said: “Honestly, I’ve never been to Scotland in my life. Where do they get it?”

When asked if Rangers had expressed an interest, he added: “Really? I certainly do not intend to leave Anderlecht.

“I like the Belgian league.”

GIVEMESPORT’S Harry Sherlock says…

Roofe would be a great signing for Rangers but it doesn’t seem all that likely.

It’s rare for a player to come out and be so open about a possible transfer, but Roofe appears to have shot this one down.

It is little surprise; he only moved to Belgium in the summer and Anderlecht are reported to have spent around £7 million on securing his signature.

They are unlikely to be willing to do business so soon after luring him to the club.

It appears that Gerrard will have to look elsewhere.
