Liverpool's record signing Andy Carroll scored his first goals for his new club as a 3-0 defeat not only dealt Manchester City a blow to their Champions League aspirations, but their FA Cup ambitions too.

The £35million striker struck twice in his sixth match since arriving in January from Newcastle as the Reds kept alive their hopes of European football next season by moving to within five points of Tottenham.

Dirk Kuyt slotted his 11th of the campaign in between Carroll's double as fourth-placed City, who are just three points ahead of Spurs having played a match more, lost leading scorer Carlos Tevez to injury just five days before their cup semi-final against Manchester United.
