Liverpool legend Phil Thompson has revealed to a Norwegian TV show that Newcastle star Jose Enrique is headed to Merceyside in June, with the full back set to join £35 million ex teammate Andy Carroll.

“From what I've heard, yes the deal has been done and he will come to Liverpool,” Thompson told Norwegian station TV2.

“It'll be interesting because he's done very well. He had a difficult first season coming into the Premier League a couple of years ago but he really understands the game now.

“He's one of those full backs who is good going forward but he's also a good defender and I think that is the main thing.”

Enrique has had a smashing season at Newcastle, and the Daily Mirror have rated the 25 year old at £15 million. Rumours had Enrique linked to Liverpool over the last few days, but Thompson, who is close friends with Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish, looks to have confirmed the worst kept secret in the Barclays Premier League.

Enrique came to Newcastle in 2007 from Villarreal for £6.3 million, and should he join Carroll at Liverpool, the two will be worth in excess of £50 million, which will no doubt be a tempting amount for Newcastle manager Alan Pardew to want to play with in the summer.
