Spurs to be given chance to sign Serie A ace

Tottenham Hotspur are clearly ready to undergo a rebuild.

The club have been running on empty for quite some time and it has now come home to roost.

Jose Mourinho’s men are languishing in ninth, nine points off fifth-placed Manchester United and 10 behind fourth-placed Leicester City.

Spurs have lost 11 of their 34 games this season, the highest figure of the traditional top six and a figure only beaten by Burnley in the top half.

They face Arsenal, who are eighth, on Sunday, in a game that could ultimately decide whether or not Spurs will be playing European football next season.

Following that game, they play Newcastle United, Leicester, and Crystal Palace before the end of the season.

It means that the summer transfer window takes on an added importance; Spurs desperately need to bring in reinforcements in a number of areas.

At right-back, for example, they currently only have Serge Aurier, with Kyle Walker-Peters out on loan at Southampton.

And Le10Sport reports that Spurs are currently interested in Atalanta right-back Timothy Castagne.

The defender is a part of one of the most exciting teams in Europe presently; the club are third in Serie A and have scored a staggering 85 goals in 31 games, an average of 2.7 goals per game.

He has scored once and provided two assists and is an astonishingly versatile player.

Indeed, per Transfermarkt, he has made 88 appearances at right-back in his career, but his second-most used position is left midfield, then right midfield, and then at left-back.

He has even played in attacking midfield and is valued at £14.4 million by the website.

And the report states that Spurs, along with Leicester City, are interested in snapping the defender up, as are PSG.

His representatives are said to be waiting patiently for the summer window and hope to have talks with Jose Mourinho, Brendan Rodgers, and Thomas Tuchel, allowing them the chance to convince him to join their respective clubs.

First, he has the Serie A run-in to play in, as well as the Champions League quarter-final against his potential suitors PSG.

GIVEMESPORT’S Harry Sherlock says…

Castagne is a dream signing for Spurs.

The Belgium international is a Swiss army knife, capable of playing in pretty much any position across the pitch.

It remains to be seen if Spurs could beat off the kind of competition that is interested in him, but he would fill multiple gaps in the club’s squad.

He would be a superb replacement for Aurier and his WhoScored numbers are remarkable.

This season, he has averaged 0.9 shots per game, 0.8 key passes, 1.3 tackles, and just 0.6 fouls; he can be just as effective in defence and in attack. He also has a passing accuracy of 85.3%.

He would be a brilliant asset to the north London club.
