Rangers need to close the gap.

The Scottish Premiership runners-up were a fair way behind Celtic at the end of the curtailed campaign.

They finished the season with just four defeats but they were 13 points behind Neil Lennon’s champions, despite losing just four games all season.

They were comfortably clear of third-placed Motherwell, though, and are clearly the second-best team in the division.

And Football Insider has now reported that moves are being made behind the scenes ahead of the summer transfer window.

It makes sense, too, with Nikola Katic, one of the club’s foremost defenders, likely to be missing from a chunk of next season after he sustained a knee ligament injury in pre-season.

As such, Rangers are ready to invest in a central defender in the coming transfer window to replace the once-capped Croatia international.

It appears that they are more likely to bring in a loan signing, and manager Steven Gerrard wants to recruit an experienced head who can slot straight into his starting XI.

Rangers, of course, are looking to stop Celtic from winning a historic 10th consecutive title in Scotland.

GIVEMESPORT’S Harry Sherlock says…

Katic is clearly an important member of Gerrard’s squad.

He made 17 starts in the league in 2019/20, often partnering Connor Goldson at the heart of the Ibrox club’s defence.

Thus, a replacement is absolutely needed.

Rangers, of course, don’t have all the money in the world to be able to snaffle up an elite-level centre-back but it is a puzzle that needs to be solved.

Bringing in some experience to sit alongside Goldson, who is only 27 and is approaching his peak, is a must in this transfer market.
