This season has been a wonderful campaign for Liverpool.

The Reds have won the top-flight for the first time in 30 years and also won the Club World Cup.

Following on from a term where they were victorious in the Champions League final, Jurgen Klopp has worked wonders at Anfield. It has been nothing short of a miraculous few years.

If you consider where the Merseysiders were when Klopp first walked into the club, it was been some turnaround.

He has achieved so much that Liverpool now look like one of the best clubs in European football.

Who wouldn't want to come and play for them next season? They should very much have the pick of the transfer market and one area where they're seemingly looking to bulk up on numbers is in midfield.

Thiago Alcantara has been linked with a switch which would cost over £30m but it appears as though Sporting Director Michael Edwards has found a cheaper alternative.

According to CBS Sports, the Reds are interested in signing another player in the Bundesliga.

That happens to be someone ex-Huddersfield boss David Wagner claimed could be one of the best in his position in the German top-flight - American Weston McKennie.

A fee of $25m (£19.8m) will have to be thrown in Schalke's direction if Klopp wants to raid one of his friends in Wagner.

Though, if Liverpool do indeed pursue the 21-year-old, they will have to fight off competition from Newcastle, Everton and Wolves.

In a separate report from The Telegraph, it's claimed McKennie would prefer a move to the Premier League.

GIVEMESPORT'S Matt Dawson says...

McKennie is certainly one for the future at just 21, but his reputation presides itself.

The Bundesliga website have compared him to a certain Arturo Vidal, one of the most exciting midfielder's in the game over the last decade.

The Chilean pitbull is adept in defensive situations but also knows where the back of the net. That's incredibly similar to McKennie who in 2019/20, has scored three goals but also completed 1.4 tackles per match.

It's clear that McKennie has immense potential but one has to wonder whether Liverpool have any need for another young central player in their squad.

After all, with 19-year-old Curtis Jones coming through the ranks and impressing this season, he'd surely receive less game time.

Jones scored against Aston Villa last week and then earned his first Premier League start vs Burnley on Saturday afternoon.

He should be the priority over any investment in that area of the pitch.
