It could be a memorable season for Leeds United with promotion very much on the cards.

Top of the Championship, Marcelo Bielsa's side are six points clear of the play-off position with just three games to go.

The club are doing all that they can to prepare for next season and that includes targeting signings for the summer.

One man who's been sensationally linked is James Milner.

The experienced midfielder came through the ranks at Elland Road before making his first team breakthrough in the White of Leeds United.

However with the West Yorkshire side facing relegation, Milner went on to pastures news with spells at Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester City and most recently, Liverpool.

The 34-year-old has been a key part of Jurgen Klopp's side that won the Premier League this season, meaning that rumours of a return to Leeds United seemed far-fetched at best.

One man who knows if a sensational return is on the cards is Phil Hay of The Athletic who was quick to pour cold water on the rumours.

Writing in a Q&A for The Athletic, Hay said: "It's been rumoured constantly but I'm not convinced and no-one at Leeds has mentioned him to me as a target.

"Financially it would be extremely expensive and as best I can see, Milner is still very much involved in Anfield.

"He was quoted recently as saying that it would feel strange to be playing against Leeds next season - so that probably answers your question."

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

While promotion to the Premier League is all-but confirmed, this is a move that still seems a little bit far-fetched.

James Milner is a Leeds United boy through and through, and I'm sure that the idea of playing for his hometown club would be hugely appealing before the end of his career.

But now probably isn't the time.

Milner still has plenty to offer at Liverpool and it's highly unlikely that Jurgen Klopp would want to lose a player as influential at the versatile midfielder.

Add into that his substantial wages, and you can see why it's a move that's unlikely to come off.

Never say never, but I can't see it.
