Manchester City’s success in overturning their Champions League ban has a significant impact on the teams fighting it out to finish in the top four of the Premier League.

With City facing a two-year ban from European competition, the team that finished fifth in the table would have played in next season’s Champions League.

But that’s no longer the case. Only the top four will now qualify for the group stages of the competition.

Liverpool and Man City are guaranteed to finish in the top two but behind them, four teams have a realistic shot of making up the four best sides.

The final weeks of the season will prove to be very dramatic, with Chelsea, Leicester City, Manchester United and Wolves locked in a fierce battle to make it.

United’s run of form leaves them in a great place to return to the Champions League without having to win the Europa League.

However, there’s a chance that not even a fourth-placed finish will guarantee Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team a Champions League berth in 2020/21.

Admittedly, it’s a very slim chance. But it might just be enough to convince United to guarantee their place among Europe’s big boys by finishing third.

The requirements for that to happen are for the winners of the Champions League and Europa League to both come from England and both of those sides to finish outside of the top four.

So, for example, if Wolves won the Europa League and Chelsea the Champions League - with neither finishing inside the top four - the fourth-placed team in the Premier League would miss out on the elite club competition.

They would drop into the Europa League instead.

It’s highly unlikely to happen given that Frank Lampard’s Chelsea are currently 3-0 down in their Champions League last-16 tie with Bayern Munich.

But considering last season’s competition saw Tottenham and Liverpool produce thrilling comebacks, nothing can be ruled out.

Given Chelsea and Leicester City’s form lately, Man United will fancy their chances of finishing third anyway.
