Everton are all of a sudden on the rocks again.

Under Carlo Ancelotti, the Toffees have looked a shadow of the side that struggled under Marco Silva.

However, old habits die hard. Everton are now without a win in their last three games, being beaten by Spurs and drawing with Southampton. What followed was a reminder of the hard work that still needs to occur at Goodison, losing 3-0 to Wolves.

That was fine evidence that Ancelotti's men need to strengthen significantly in the summer.

The former Chelsea boss has visions of European football returning to the blue side of Merseyside but that is unlikely to happen if they suffer defeats like they did last weekend.

What that loss also showed, though, is the need for an improvement in the defence.

Lille defender Gabriel has been linked, as too has Barcelona full-back Emerson.

Ancelotti

One of the most eye-catching players that have emerged on Marcel Brands' radar is PSG defender Thiago Silva.

The centre-back was linked with the club a number of weeks ago but there has now been a fresh update in their pursuit of the 35-year-old.

It's thought that Everton are still in the hunt for the Brazilian but there are now thoughts his current club could hand him a contract renewal.

The veteran's deal in Paris was supposed to end this summer but he might not be leaving the French capital after all.

Silva's former club AC Milan are also chasing him while Fiorentina are interested too.

Silva

GIVEMESPORT'S Matt Dawson says...

A move for Silva would be a true statement of intent from Ancelotti and Brands, one that signals they very much mean business.

On a free transfer, the Toffees can't really go too wrong, but despite being compared to one of the great defenders of all time - Franco Baresi, there are drawbacks to luring the Brazil international to Merseyside.

Silva might be recognised as one of the best modern defenders but his injury record speaks for itself - he cannot keep himself fit.

The defender has missed time with both groin and hamstring issues this term while adductor and meniscal problems troubled him in 2018/19.

Silva

The other downside of Silva would be his colossal wages.

He is currently on £325,000 at Ligue 1 champions PSG. That's a number that Everton simply wouldn't be able to afford - especially with the financial restrictions imposed by the current pandemic.

He would be a fabulous player for the Toffees, but only if they can keep him fit. Is he worth the gamble? That's something Brands will have to work out.
