Tottenham's topsy-turvy period following the resumption of football this summer was back in full force on Sunday.

Despite drawing 0-0 with lowly Bournemouth last week, Spurs bounced back in the most ideal of ways with a win over Arsenal.

Jose Mourinho's men may have struggled for possession but that didn't seem to matter - ultimately, they were the more clinical of the two sides.

However, there is a clear issue at Spurs - defence.

The Lilywhites have shipped a considerable 46 goals since Mourinho walked through the door in north London.

That record isn't showing signs of getting any better and there will no doubt be a need for improvement.

Lille defender Gabriel has been linked, as too has Bundesliga youngster Ozan Kabak. Whether the duo could improve their backline, however, is very much for debate.

One player who has been touted with a constant switch away recently is Celtic's Kristoffer Ajer.

Spurs have been eyeing the Norwegian in the past but now they've been tipped to land him.

Football.London recently suggested the Londoners should look at targeting him, but if they do indeed do that, it won't be simple.

Leicester are in the market for 22-year-old and they face competition from AC Milan as well.

Football Insider have stated in the past that the centre-back would command a £20m asking price, a fee that wouldn't be too steep for Daniel Levy and co.

Ajer

GIVEMESPORT'S Matt Dawson says...

Ajer is a star of Scottish football and you only need to look at Virgil van Dijk's impact for the realisation of how good some of their best players are.

The Dutchman has won multiple honours in his time in England and has crossed the border to devastating effect.

Ajer is very much a similar player, reigning supreme in the air and standing at 6 foot 6. He is also competent with the ball at this feet, representing the classic modern-day defender.

For an indication, the youngster completed 82.4% of his passes in the Europa League this term.

Ajer

However, he has also earned comparisons to some former greats of the game.

During a Celtic fixture, former Hearts and Rangers winger Neil McCann said:

"Kristoffer Ajer is looking like Cafu here. He is bombing up and down the right flank and has the freedom of Celtic Park.”

Fine praise indeed for such a young player. At just £20m too, Spurs would have a fine player.

He is commanding, authoritative and calm - something this Tottenham team are missing.
