Manchester United missed out on the chance to move into the top four after drawing 2-2 with Southampton on Monday.The Red Devils led at Old Trafford until Michael Obafemi scored in the 96th minute to spoil United’s party.The result means that instead of climbing to third, United remain in fifth place.United captain Harry Maguire lamented his side’s performance in his post-match interview and one moment from Bruno Fernandes in the second half highlighted that.Indeed, it even led to a scolding from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.In the 62nd minute, the Portuguese midfielder ruined a promising move by misplacing an attempted pass to Marcus Rashford.Solskjaer was overheard yelling "Come on!" at Fernandes.
The United boss knows that Bruno can make that pass and wasn't afraid to call him out, despite his recent performances.
That's just the type of management United have been calling for.
But unfortunately for Solskjaer, a defensive lapse in concentration resulted in his side dropping two points.
As far as Fernandes is concerned, it wasn’t his best performance in a United shirt.
The Manchester Evening News rated his display five out of 10, writing: “So below-par two deliveries in almost as many seconds failed to beat the first man. Still got an assist for Martial's strike.”
Solskjaer’s mood simmered by the time he spoke to Sky Sports at full-time.
"It was the worst time to concede a goal but it happens in football,” the Norwegian said. “We have won so many games in that way.
“It is all part of the learning for this team. You think you have three points in the bag but we probably didn't deserve three points today.”
There’s a short turnaround for United.
They’re back in action on Thursday with a trip to Crystal Palace.
It’s looking increasingly likely that United’s clash with Leicester on the final day of the season will decide both clubs’ fate.
