It could be a memorable season for Leeds United.

Promotion is very much on the cards with the club sitting at the top of the Championship with just six games to go.

One point ahead of second place West Brom, and six ahead of the chasing pack, it seems that a place in the Premier League is very much there's to lose.

With that in mind it makes sense that the club have started making plans for the summer ahead.

Regardless of what league they're in, Leeds will be looking to strengthen their squad with an exciting new target coming to light.

Reports have claimed that Leeds United are keen on a move for Lucas Martinez Quarta.

Quarta, who plays for Argentine giants River Plate, is reportedly a 'top priority' for the Whites who are keen to sign a central defender ahead of the new season.

Valued at £9million by Transfermarkt, the 24-year-old is reportedly being monitored by other clubs in the Premier League.

While interest is in it's early stages, they have been verified by The Athletic's Phil Hay who has confirmed that the defender is one of a number of options being looked at by the Yorkshire side.

Asked in a Q&A if Quarta is a target, Hay replied: "They are scouting players in Argentina and he’s one of them but it sounds like Leeds are looking a little more closely at domestic players.”

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

This is one that I'd take with a rather large pinch of salt.

Leeds United are bound to be monitoring targets from all over the world and that includes players from South America.

However such links are so premature that there's little to suggest that a move could happen.

Lucas Martinez Quarta is certainly a player who is highly regarded, but it would be a big gamble for Marcelo Bielsa to sign the defender and throw him straight in for what could be their first season back in the Premier League.

As claimed by Phil Hay, it seems to make more sense to go for a player with experience of the English game - and ideally the top flight.

That's not to say that he wouldn't be a decent addition, but it'll be worth assessing all of the options available before making a decision.
