Man Utd want to bring back Dean Henderson and play him over David De Gea

Man Utd want Dean Henderson back for the 2020/21 season...

David De Gea's career has been on the decline for over two years now.

Ever since Cristiano Ronaldo fired a hat-trick past the Spaniard at the 2018 World Cup, the Manchester United man just hasn't been the same entity between the posts.

Mistakes have become commonplace and the sheer number of times the former Atletico Madrid man has been beaten at his near post is unacceptable for a 'keeper of his supposed calibre.

Throughout the 2019/20 season, United fans have questioned whether De Gea - who is the highest-paid 'keeper in world football - is still worthy of the number one jersey at the club.

Dean Henderson's form at Sheffield United throughout the campaign has only added to the scepticism surrounding the Spaniard's place in the Red Devils' starting XI.

Henderson in action for Sheffield United

The Englishman has kept 13 clean sheets in his 33 Premier League games with the Blades, conceding just 27 goals in the process.

In contrast, De Gea has managed only 11 clean sheets in 35 games, conceding 35 goals in that time.

So it's perhaps no wonder that United are now reportedly looking to bring Henderson back to the club and offer him a starting role at De Gea's expense.

Journalist Duncan Castles tweeted today: "Manchester United want Dean Henderson back at Old Trafford - and are ready to select the England under-21 goalkeeper ahead of David De Gea."

It would be a bold, yet practical move from the club and it would surely spell the end for De Gea at Old Trafford.

After all, why would United want to keep a second-choice 'keeper with a salary of £395,000-per-week on their books? Especially given that they have the dependable Sergio Romero within their ranks.

It's a scenario which I can certainly see playing out. Regardless of his dip in form in recent years, De Gea would still have numerous high-profile suitors in the transfer market.

They'd likely cough up a decent fee as well to aid United in pursuing their summer transfer targets. Jadon Sancho anyone?
