Liverpool can no longer set a new record for the most points in a single Premier League campaign after losing 2-1 at Arsenal.
The defeat leaves Jurgen Klopp's side on 93 points with two games remaining. A return of 99 points won't be enough to reach the 100 points that Manchester City set in 2018.
The Reds have already secured the Premier League title, which was their number one aim for the season.
But to miss out on the points record, which was certainly on the cards before the coronavirus suspension, is disappointing.
All three goals came in a chaotic first half.
Liverpool opened the lead in the 20th minute when Sadio Mane finished off a neat move but nobody could have predicted what was to come.
Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool’s rock at the back, made an awful error to allow Arsenal to equalise.
The Dutchman was put under pressure by Reiss Nelson and his attempted backpass fell to Alexandre Lacazette, who rounded Alisson Becker and fired home.
Twelves minutes later and it was Alisson’s turn to mess things up. The Liverpool goalkeeper cheaply gave the ball to Lacazette, who turned provider for Nelson.
The look on Jurgen Klopp’s face said it all.
Liverpool were on top for the entirety of the second half but they couldn't find an equaliser.
Mohamed Salah and Van Dijk both had chances to score but neither were taken.
And so Liverpool will be left to wonder what could have been.
The points record seemed a formality before the season was called to a half. They could have finished on 109 points.
But defeats to Man City and Arsenal, along with draws against Everton and Burnley, have hurt their chances of being considered the greatest team in Premier League history.
