Jan Vertonghen faces an intriguing summer.

The Tottenham Hotspur defender has a contract that expires at the end of the season.

But he remains a fine member of Jose Mourinho’s squad, playing 90 minutes against Bournemouth last week, helping his side to a clean sheet in a drab 0-0 draw.

In total, he has played 29 times in all competitions, scoring two goals and registering an assist.

However, he is set to depart once the campaign ends, as no new deal appears to be in the offing.

There have been reports of interest from Europe; Inter Milan and Roma have both been linked with potential swoops.

However, a Premier League suitor has now emerged for the experienced centre-back.

Per Het Laatste Nieuws, via Sport Witness, Manchester City could move for the Belgium international.

Pep Guardiola is said to want to sign two centre-backs in the summer transfer window; a ball-playing defender and a left-footed player.

A priority is to have a player who can cover for Aymeric Laporte but also play at left-back and Vertonghen is touted as a possible option.

City are said to be monitoring his situation and the report states that his lack of transfer fee and his wages - £100,000-per-week, via Spotrac – are said to be major plus points.

GIVEMESPORT’S Harry Sherlock says…

Vertonghen would be an excellent acquisition for City.

However, it does shine a light on how much of an error this could be from Spurs.

That Guardiola believes Vertonghen could do a job in his squad suggests that he should be remaining with the north London giants, at least for another year.

Letting him go means that there will have to be a replacement signed – likely for a fee – and Spurs should be making every effort to convince Vertonghen to stay.

Instead, they could see him move to the Etihad Stadium and potentially fill out his trophy cabinet.

One would understand Vertonghen’s decision if he did move to City; Spurs’ stance is harder to fathom.
