Arsenal have been a topsy-turvy side since football restarted last month.

Suffering defeats to Manchester City, Brighton and Spurs, they've also recorded some extremely impressive wins.

The Gunners have beaten Wolves and Sheffield United on the road, while their best result was asaved for Wednesday night as they saw off Liverpool.

For supporters of the London club, it would have been a breath of fresh air to see opposition defenders slipping up, rather than theirs.

Virgil van Dijk's misplaced pass allowed Alexandre Lacazette to equalise before Alisson's moment of lapse in concentration led to an easy goal for Reiss Nelson.

It was uncharacteristic of the Reds to concede goals like that, but you can forgive them for switching off after already winning the title.

Despite Arsenal's win, though, the gulf in class between the two sides was supreme. The Gunners struggled for possession and witnessed an onslaught on their goal in the second period.

Speaking after the game, Mikel Arteta remarked that if Arsenal are to ever get close to Liverpool, they will need to spend.

Just how much money they have to use in the window remains to be seen but they may have to be careful and pursue cheaper players instead.

In fact, their latest target is a free agent so that solves that particular problem.

According to Goal, the Gunners are interested in signing defender Malang Sarr.

The defender's contract expired at Nice this summer and as a result, is allowed to speak to parties elsewhere.

It's reported that Arsenal have already begun negotiations to acquire the 21-year-old but Raul Sanllehi and co are yet to offer him a contract.

GIVEMESPORT'S Matt Dawson says...

Arsenal's defence has improved since Arteta walked into the club but there are still signs that improvement is needed.

Shkodran Mustafi still has shaky moments while the less said about David Luiz at times the better.

One positive is that William Saliba will return to north London after a loan spell with St Etienne, but it's important to remember he is still a very raw talent.

Sarr is also young, aged just 21, but he certainly has the ability to improve Arsenal's backline in the future.

Sarr

The youngster was named as one of the most promising defenders in the world in February 2018 while he's previously been chased by Chelsea, Real Madrid and Barcelona.

The centre-back is clearly someone with a huge amount of potential and if he's good enough for Patrick Vieira, he's good enough for Arsenal.

Sarr was described as a "leader" by the former Gunners captain and given they lack players with that kind of attribute, he'd be a worthy addition.
