Newcastle United don’t know who will be funding their summer spending.

Their protracted takeover has not been completed, and they remain suspended in limbo.

They are, at the very least, safe from the threat of relegation, given that they sit 13th in the table, 12 points clear of the bottom three with just two games of the season remaining.

They play Brighton & Hove Albion and champions Liverpool before the end of the season.

They do still have something to fight for, however, as they look to secure an 11th-placed finish.

It remains to be seen if they will have the backing of the Saudi Arabian-backed Public Investment Fund as they look to strengthen their squad in the coming transfer window.

They have already initiated contact with one potential signing, however, per Il Sussi Diario via Sport Witness.

That potential signing is Patrik Schick, the AS Roma striker.

He has spent the season on loan at RB Leipzig, scoring 10 goals in 22 games for the German club in the Bundesliga.

Leipzig had the opportunity to buy Schick for €29 million (£26.3m) but they are not set to take up that option.

Newcastle are reported to have made an enquiry for the forward, along with Bayer Leverkusen, Fiorentina, and AC Milan.

A fee of €25m (£22.6m) is set to be enough to secure the Czech Republic international, a relative pittance if the takeover does go through.

GIVEMESPORT’S Harry Sherlock says…

Schick would be an undoubted upgrade on Newcastle’s current striking options.

They have Joelinton, Dwight Gayle, and Andy Carroll to call upon but they have just five Premier League goals between them.

Carroll has not provided a single one of those goals, and Newcastle really do need to find some proper firepower.

Schick has hit double figures this term, though he has struggled at times with Roma – he netted just three times in 2018/19.

But this season, he has shown that he knows exactly where the net is; Newcastle ought to be bringing him in, takeover or no takeover.
