Real Madrid were crowned La Liga champions on Thursday night after beating Villarreal at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stéfano.Zinedine Zidane’s side knew that victory would be enough to see them earn their first La Liga title since 2017.Karim Benzema - who else? - put Los Blancos 1-0 up midway through the first half after being set up by Luka Modric. And the French striker then sealed all three points - and the league title - from the penalty spot in the second half. But this was no straightforward penalty. On the first attempt, Sergio Ramos stepped up to take the spot-kick, but rolled the ball to Benzema instead of shooting.

Yep, the pair of them tried to wrap up the league title with a pass penalty, like the one we saw between Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez a few years ago.

But instead of Messi and Suarez, Ramos and Benzema’s effort was more like Thierry Henry and Robert Pires’s infamous effort.

Okay, it wasn’t quite *that* bad - but they still failed to pull it off.

Benzema converted from close-range but the penalty was ordered to be retaken due to encroachment.

The Real Madrid striker had gone too early!

You can watch the incident here…

They’d clearly been planning that all week. Shame they made such a mess of it.

Real Madrid’s players were handed another opportunity to double their lead, however, and this time Benzema stepped up and slammed the ball into the bottom corner past Sergio Asenjo.

He probably should have done that in the first place!
