It was a night to forget for everyone connected with Barcelona on Thursday night.

They knew that whatever they did against Osasuna, Real Madrid would be crowned La Liga champions if they beat Villarreal.

Real did beat Villarreal 2-1 to secure the title while Barca succumbed to a shock home defeat against Osasuna.

After it was confirmed that Real were champions, captain Lionel Messi gave a very emotional interview.

The Argentine superstar didn’t hold back and even brought up his side’s collapses against both Roma and Liverpool in the previous two Champions League campaigns.

"Roma, Liverpool... the fans are running out of patience because we're not giving them anything," Messi said. "If we want to fight for the Champions League, a lot has to change. Like this, we will lose to Napoli.

“We didn’t want to end the season like this but it represents how the season has gone. We were a very erratic, very weak, low-intensity team…

"We lost a lot of points and today’s game is a summary of the season.

“We were inconsistent during the season. Real Madrid did their thing. We lost a lot of points. We have to do some self-criticism. We are Barça.”

It was clear that Messi was fuming.

But you didn’t need to wait for the end of the match to see that something was visibly wrong with the six-time Ballon d’Or winner.

That’s because his reaction after he scored a brilliant free-kick said it all.

Quique Setien’s side trailed after just 15 minutes when Arnaiz Diaz Jose Manuel put the away side ahead.

However, just after the hour mark, Messi scored a trademark free-kick to level the scores.

But instead of celebrating, Messi just threw his hand up in the air in disgust. You’d be mistaken for thinking his free-kick was an awful attempt.

Something is seriously wrong at the Camp Nou, isn’t it?

It's actually quite sad to see Messi react to scoring a goal like that. He's scored 23 goals in the league this season and provided 20 assists. But it was all for nothing.

Barcelona’s season now rests on the Champions League. They drew the first leg of their last-16 clash away to Napoli 1-1 and will be looking to progress to the quarter-finals with a good result in the second leg.

But it’s clear not everything is well at the club and Messi clearly isn’t happy right now.
