Brazilian shining light in Chelsea loss

In the sad display last night as Chelsea bowed out of the Champions League 3-1 on aggregate, there was one shining light of hope for a brighter future – Brazilian defender Alex making his first start for the Blues in over three months.

Alex suffered a knee injury in November last year that required surgery, and has taken three months to fully heal.

The star defender clocked his first minutes since recovering against Wigan, coming off the bench at the 75th minute. But last night the Chelsea utility last 87 minutes in a display that surprised even SirAlex Ferguson.

“The only surprise was Alex, I didn't expect him to play,” Ferguson said of the starting line up.

“He's been out for three months or so, and considering he's not played he did well.”

Alex rejoining fellow Brazilians Ramires and David Luiz will be a huge boost for Chelsea, as they aim to keep slim hopes of a title charge alive as well as making sure they qualify for the Champions League next season to exact their revenge after a difficult defeat last night.

While Chelsea will be suffering disappointment after their defeat in the Champions League, they will now be looking forward to their Barclays Premier League clash with West Brom, and Alex will certainly be boosting the Blue’s chances of at least holding onto their third spot.
