Real Madrid won their first La Liga title in three years on Thursday night.

Los Blancos beat Villareal 2-1 to secure the trophy with one game to spare, finishing above Barcelona for the first time since 2017.

Karim Benzema's double at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano delivered Madrid their domestic glory and the Frenchman has been in fine form all season long.

He's scored 21 goals and provided eight assists in the 2019/20 campaign and with one game to go, could overtake Lionel Messi - who is on 23 goals - to win the La Liga Golden Boot.

Given the contrasting form of Real Madrid and Barcelona, it's not out of the question to suggest Benzema could finish as top scorer.

But the Golden Boot isn't the only individual award he's been tipped to win.

Following title success, Madrid's president Florentino Perez has called for Benzema to win the Ballon d'Or.

Benzema was incredible for Madrid this season

"Benzema should be the Ballon d'Or [winner]," Perez said, per the Daily Mail.

"I have not seen any player have as good a year as him."

GIVEMESPORT's Ollie Browning says:

While Perez is hopeful his striker will win the Ballon d'Or, we just can't see it happening.

Benzema hasn't done enough to win the Ballon d'Or, though

'I have not seen any player have as good a year as him' - really, Florentino?

Just look at what Robert Lewandowski has achieved at Bayern Munich. He has 51 goals and six assists in 43 games.

Now those are outrageous, Ballon d'Or winning stats. If the prize doesn't go to Lewandowski, there are probably two others in line ahead of Benzema, too.

Lewandowski is the Ballon d'Or favourite

Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. While Madrid won La Liga, there's no doubt Barcelona's captain had another brilliant individual season - he was simply better than Benzema.

His 23 goals and ridiculous 20 assists in the league alone prove that.

Then there's Ronaldo, who is driving Juventus towards the Serie A title with 28 goals and five assists so far this season.

Ronaldo is also up there as a favourite

Yes, Benzema has been great - and incredibly important in helping Madrid win La Liga. But sorry, Florentino, we can't see him winning the Ballon d'Or this year.
