Barcelona players looked dejected on the Camp Nou pitch after surrendering their La Liga title.

Losing 2-1 at home to Osasuna wasn't the way any Spanish champions would have wanted to hand over the trophy, never mind to their historic rivals Real Madrid.

The atmosphere of frustration in Catalonia was evident with Lionel Messi looking particularly disheartened, barely celebrating when he notched Barca's only goal on the night from a free-kick.

Barcelona miss out on La Liga glory

The Argentine even vocalised his disappointment in a remarkable post-match interview, suggesting that the club would be eliminated from the Champions League based on their performance.

Whether or not Barcelona suffer in Europe because of their domestic woes remains to be seen, but it certainly will have pained the players to see Zinedine Zidane's men lifting the Spanish crown.

There's a real sense that an internal review will be conducted on Barcelona's season and the future of many players, not just manager Quique Setién, could be up for debate in the boardroom.

Change on the horizon?

Supporters probably have a few names in mind that they would like to see gone already but unlucky for them, the direction of the club lies in the hands of Josep Maria Bartomeu and his peers.

That doesn't mean they can't express their opinion, though, and Spanish newspaper Marca has given them a platform to rank the current Barcelona squad based on their displays this season.

The site allows them to either up-vote or down-vote players depending on whether they think that individual should be higher or lower when compared to their teammates.

GIVEMESPORT's Kobe Tong says

Perhaps Messi roasting the team has something to do with him finishing second but, frankly, Barca would barely be competing for Champions League qualification if it wasn't for his brilliance.

I think the key observation to make here is how far down some of the stalwarts of the last decade at Camp Nou find themselves: Alba (15th) Suarez (13th), Busquets (12th) and Pique (11th).

Barca's crippling inability to build on the foundations of Luis Enrique's treble-winners has been hidden by the fact players like Pique, Alba and Suarez have continued to shine. Until recently.

Now that they're ageing, Barca are left wanting for what else they have in the team and to tell you the truth, what remains from behind the 2010-2015 crop is far below the club's expected level.

It's no wonder there's speculation that the Blaugrana could become the latest AC Milan when their privilege of having the greatest footballer of all time expires.

Don't get me wrong, players like Puig and Fati look top, top quality, but they're not going to win league titles and Champions League crowns on their own in the next five years or so.

Call me hyperbolic, but a volcano is due to erupt at FC Barcelona and the clock is ticking for them to mitigate the damage it causes. GOATs don't stay in one field forever...
