It's set to be an exciting summer for Newcastle United supporters.

While the Premier League are yet to make a decision on the proposed takeover of the club from Amanda Staveley and the Saudi-backed consortium for a sum of £300m, that won't stop them making preparations for the transfer market.

The Magpies have all-but secured survival in the Premier League, meaning that plans can be made for next season.

Regardless of who will be running the club, the first team squad needs strengthening and that has to be a priority.

Several positions are being pinpointed as areas to improve and that bodes well for a big summer of transfer business.

Many names have already been linked with a move, but one could certainly gets fans very excited.

According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle are interested in Chris Basham.

The Sheffield United defender has been a first team regular so far this term in a campaign which has seen the Blades defy all expectations.

In fact, Chris Wilder's side are firmly on track to qualify for next season's Europa League.

Basham has been a key part of that with the defensive colossus racking up 40 appearances so far this term.

However his future at Bramall Lane is uncertain.

The defender is out of contract next summer, and at the age of 31 it remains to be seen whether he has a future in South Yorkshire.

This summer would be Sheffield United's last chance to properly cash in on the experienced centre-back, meaning that a move could be on the cards.

As well as Newcastle United, Burnley are also said to be keen on a move as they target a reliable Premier League defender.

However it remains to be seen whether the Magpies will be able to convince Basham to move to the North East, particularly with a European campaign a distinct possibility at his current club.

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

It might not be a move that gets Newcastle United fans dancing in the street, but this would be an excellent deal.

Chris Basham has been one of the Premier League's most reliable defenders so far this term and deserves plenty of credit for the way that Sheffield United have performed.

As well as being a no-nonsense defender, the 31-year-old has proven that he can play a little bit too, something which is increasingly appealing in the modern day game.

Newcastle are desperately in need of a proven defender, and Basham could be the perfect addition.

He wouldn't need time to settle in - he would come in and hit the ground running.

His influence in the dressing room would be outstanding, and that means that he's exactly the sort of player and person that Steve Bruce needs.
