Arsenal receive intriguing player exchange offer from Barcelona for Matteo Guendouzi

Arsenal are actively looking to sell Matteo Guendouzi

Matteo Guendouzi’s Arsenal career appears to be all but over.

The Frenchman started the season in fine form under Unai Emery and was revered by many Gunners fans as a future club captain.

But the 21-year-old has well and truly fallen out of favour with Mikel Arteta after his childish actions during Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat away at Brighton back in June.

After Neal Maupay had scored a dramatic late winner at the Amex Stadium, Guendouzi grabbed his countryman by the throat, sparking a ruckus between the two teams.

Since then, Guendouzi has not been included in a match day squad and it’s a well-known fact within the football sphere that Arsenal are looking to offload him.

Regardless of his attitude, the youngster’s undoubted talent and potential will mean he has plenty of suitors this summer, with Barcelona reportedly entering the race for his signature.

However, the Spanish giants are struggling a bit on the financial front, so they’ve decided to offer Arsenal a player of their own in exchange for Guendouzi.

The man in question? Former Liverpool superstar Philippe Coutinho, according to Foot Mercato.

Arsenal have been crying out for an elite-level playmaker this season, with Mesut Ozil’s future at the club still up in the air.

Could Coutinho be the answer to the club’s creativity woes? Well, we all know the Gunners adore signing Kia Joorabchian’s clients of late.

On the face of it, this looks like a deal Arsenal would be fools to turn down. When the Brazilian is on song, there are few better playmakers in world football.

However, Coutinho’s wages at Barcelona are enormous and surely the Gunners would have to insist on a substantial pay cut to avoid a potential repeat of Ozil’s current situation at the Emirates.

In my opinion, it would be a very, very risky signing, but Arsenal’s current situation both on and off the pitch means it might be one they have to take.

After all, are they going to have the cash reserves to sign a player of Coutinho’s calibre this summer? Probably not, especially when the club are actively pursuing Thomas Partey and Dayot Upamecano.
