Arsenal's David Luiz was on fire during the 2-0 win over Manchester City on Saturday night.

The Brazilian has been one of the most criticised players in the Premier League since the restart, seldom going a single game without producing an error that had Arsenal fans watching in disbelief.

However, nothing could have been more cathartic for Luiz than dropping a masterclass against the same team that embarrassed in the Gunners' first match back from lockdown.

Luiz's Man City masterclass

Luiz was at fault for Raheem Sterling's opening goal at the Etihad Stadium, before his nightmarish cameo off the bench was compiled by conceding a penalty and picking up a red card.

So, it couldn't have been more of a contrast to see Luiz playing like one of the world's best defenders against the side with the most Premier League goals this season.

"There was a lot of criticism of me, I think you can say that," the Brazilian said after the game. "That's part of football. I understood during my career that part of football is about surviving."

Luiz: Superb defensively and offensively

City applied heavy pressure on their underdog opponents for large spells at Wembley Stadium, but almost every pass or cross into the area seemed to be met with either Luiz's head or foot.

The ex-Chelsea man was throwing himself in front of shots to make dramatic blocks with his head, rising metres into the air for dramatic clearances and once again showing his quality on the ball.

Besides, although Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang ultimately found the net twice in the semi-final, he could have opened the scoring even earlier if he'd converted a superb through-ball from Luiz.

Luiz's individual highlights

It was, for all intents and purposes, one of the finest defensive performances of the season and he thoroughly deserved the Man of the Match award that came his way.

And it should come as no surprise that Luiz's immaculate individual highlights have been stitched together in the wake of the game with Twitter user @LSComps coming up trumps.

The compilation has already attracted 1,700 'likes' and over 700 retweets, so check out Luiz's masterclass in all its glory down below:

What did that all translate to? A superb statistical rating of 8.33 on WhoScored, which is the same as Sergio Ramos' best game this season and better than any Virgil van Dijk display since January.

GIVEMESPORT's Kobe Tong says

Why don't we see this side to you more often, David?

Anybody who denies that Luiz has got a world-class defender inside of him simply hasn't watched him play and his performance against Pep Guardiola's men showed what he can do at his best.

We're talking about a defender who made 33 Premier League appearances for one of the greatest champions of the modern era in Antonio Conte's Chelsea, after all.

Luiz has got untold experience under his belt and it shows at times like yesterday; Arsenal fans are merely crying out for the consistency required to build momentum in north London.

But for whatever reason - and it will forever be the paradox of Luiz - he can never seem to go more than three games without putting his foot in it.
