Leeds fans celebrated their return to the Premier League in the city centre on Sunday - but left it looking a state.A clean-up job was carried out on Monday as council works cleared the streets, which were littered with empty bottles, cans and plastic bags.Rebecca Marano, a journalist for The Yorkshire Post, attended the scene and urged people to be careful as they travelled around the city.“Broken bottles and tins everywhere,” she wrote on Twitter. “The cleaners have their work cut out for them.“Picking glass out my trainers now. Be careful walking around town with your little toes!!”Leeds’ return to the top flight after a 16-year absence was sealed on Friday when West Brom were beaten by Huddersfield.It’s been a lengthy wait for their supporters, who watched them sink to League One in 2007, but they’re now back where many believe they belong.However the celebrations went overboard, with the Daily Mail reporting that a female police officer suffered serious head injuries on Sunday evening after being pelted with bottles.Temporary Assistant Chief Constable Oz Khan said: “Throughout the weekend, fans have gathered across Leeds to celebrate the promotion of Leeds United into the Premier League.“We have continued to impress upon fans the importance of the Covid-19 Government guidance and our approach has primarily remained as one of engagement and encouragement.“On Sunday, almost 7,000 people gathered in Millennium Square in Leeds."Whilst the vast majority of fans were enjoying themselves and celebrating, there were a small minority of people who began to throw bottles at police officers.“A female officer suffered a serious head injury and was taken to hospital for treatment, a number of other officers suffered minor injuries and a further 15 members of the public were injured.”Footage showed supporters ignoring social distancing guidelines as they gathered in Millennium Square.
One local wrote on Twitter: “I live in Leeds and these images of fans celebrating in Millennium Square make me worried that we will be following Leicester for lockdown in a couple of weeks.”
