Not too many football fans would have been tuning into Brighton vs Newcastle on Monday night.

Brighton needed just one point to guarantee Premier League survival for another season, while Newcastle were already safe sitting comfortably on 43 points.

It certainly wasn’t a must-watch.

Ahead of the match, Brighton boss Graham Potter had nothing but praise for the job Steve Bruce had done at Newcastle.

Bruce took over the Toon Army in difficult circumstances following the sacking of Rafa Benitez.

He’s also had to contend with an impending takeover at St James’ Park with the controversial Mike Ashley looking to sell to Saudi investors.

"I think he's done an amazing job when you consider the bit of negativity that was surrounding it to start with and a lot of the off the pitch noise shall we say that doesn't help but in terms of results, he's clear of anything," the Brighton boss told reporters on a Zoom call.

"He's assembled a team with some real attacking threats there, defensively organised, so I think he's done a great job. He's a really experienced guy, a top football person. Whenever I come across his teams, I respect the teams a lot so I think he's done really well."

Bruce has led Newcastle to safety despite numerous injury problems throughout the entire campaign.

One of the club’s most important players, Matt Ritchie, missed 19 matches earlier in the campaign due to a serious ankle injury.

But the Scot has since returned and has scored twice since the Premier League’s restart.

However, the versatile 30-year-old was involved in a rather hilarious moment during the game against Brighton.

Ritchie gave away a foul and those watching without crowd sound would have heard exactly what he said to the poor assistant referee.

Ritchie was adjudged to have fouled Tariq Lamptey and he reacted by shouting “How have you given that, you wee d**k?” to the official.

Ritchie was perhaps fortunate not to be booked for his choice of language but was given a yellow card minutes later for a tough tackle.
