Seth Rollins and Rey Mysterio met at Extreme Rules in an 'Eye for an Eye' match.

The stipulation meant that a winner was only decided when they had 'extracted their opponent's eye'.

Sounds pretty gruesome, right?

Well, the finish to the match has come under criticism from fans because it just looked so silly.

Mysterio pulled out a fake eyeball and used a bit of fake blood as Rollins vomited beside him at ringside.

Rey's injury is clearly fake, but there have been plenty of occasions where WWE stars have been seriously injured while performing.

With that in mind, GIVEMESPORT have decided to look back at some of the most gruesome injuries pro-wrestling has ever seen.

Mysterio's injury is fake, but plenty have been real

John Cena's broken nose and torn pec

The 16-time world champion has had his fair share of injuries. Back in 2007, he suffered a torn pec while attempting to hip toss Mr Kennedy.

Cena's muscle injury could be clearly seen as clutched his pec. He missed months of action because of the issue, but it wasn't the only time he's been hurt in the ring.

Fast forward to 2015 and he broke his nose against Seth Rollins. The Architect caught him flush with a knee and shattered Cena's face.

Luckily, it wasn't a serious injury and incredibly, John returned after just one week off. The photos are pretty crazy, though.

Stone Cold Steve Austin's neck

One of the most famous WWE injuries came at SummerSlam in 1997, when Stone Cold nearly broke his neck.

Austin took a reverse piledriver from Owen Hart that drove his head into the mat. He's since recalled being unable to feel anything from his neck down and thinking he'd be paralysed for life.

Incredibly, the Rattlesnake finished the match and won, but he spent much of his career after battling through severe pain, partly due to being rushed back so quickly.

Mick Foley's broken body

Seriously, what didn't Foley injure during his WWE career? The most hardcore man in pro-wrestling was famous for putting his body on the line.

His most famous injuries came against The Undertaker at King of the Ring in 1998. As we all know, Foley was thrown off the top of the cell and even fell through it for good measure too.

That night, he suffered a concussion, bruised his kidney, and dislocated both his jaw and his shoulder. One of his teeth could even be seen hanging from his nose after.

The Undertaker's eye

Ah, a real eye injury. There were no fake props used with this one. In 1995, The Undertaker suffered a broken orbital bone in a match with Mabel.

Thankfully, the incident didn't affect his vision and he didn't lose an eye - unlike Mysterio.

He soon returned to action with a Phantom of the Opera style mask.

Randy Orton's broken collarbone

During a match with Triple H in 2008, Orton was thrown over the top rope, landed uncomfortably and broke his collarbone.

Despite the injury, The Viper continued to fight on and the commentators even made reference to his shattered collarbone.

It was all for nothing though as Triple H retained his championship and Orton spent the next five months on the shelf.

Nikki Bella's neck and brain issues

Nikki was forced into retirement in 2019 after suffering a number of serious injuries throughout her career.

The biggest issue was a herniated disc behind her vertebrae - more commonly known as a broken neck - as well as a cyst on her brain.

"I herniated the disk above where I had surgery, I have all this inflammation around the metal, and then I have a cyst on my brain," Nikki revealed last year.

"So, they were like, 'You're done, no more, you're out.' So, I didn't get a choice, which sucks."

Those listed above are just a select number of serious injuries we've seen in WWE over the years.

We could have included the likes of Paige, Shawn Michaels or Big Show too - all of those performers picked up infamous issues too.

While Rey Mysterio's eye injury is fake, it's important to remember that plenty of stars have suffered real-life injuries in the squared circle.

Mysterio's injury was fake, but many are not

Whether its a broken nose, shattered collarbone or a broken neck, each time a serious injury is suffered, the correct precautions have to be followed.

Some stars, like Orton and Cena, carried on wrestling through their matches even after hurting themselves.

Others weren't so lucky and have been forced into early retirement.

There's a reason WWE discourage viewers from trying anything at home. Always remember, wrestling can be dangerous.
