Tottenham Hotspur face a pivotal summer.

It's been a torrid season by Spurs' standards and that means that they could be facing a massive rebuild ahead of the new season.

Jose Mourinho has struggled to get a consistent tune out of his new squad, and so it's more than likely that he'll be looking to make plenty of changes to put his stamp on things.

Given the impact of COVID-19, that could prove to be difficult with funds likely to be low as the club tackle the significant hit to their income.

That said, there should still be money to spend.

Several positions are already being targeted, one of which is an attacking midfielder.

According to reports from Corriere della Sera, Spurs are plotting a move for Nicolo Zaniolo.

The Roma midfielder is one of the most promising players in Serie A, and has been heavily linked with a move away.

It's claimed that Juventus and Inter Milan are also keen on a move.

One potential stumbling block could be the reported valuation of £50million - a significant fee for a player of his experience.

However due to his undoubted potential, it remains to be seen whether there could be any suitors.

Tottenham Hotspur are looking at the creative midfielder as a potential replacement for Christian Eriksen.

The Danish international hasn't been suitably replaced since he left the club in January, and that's bound to be an area that Mourinho wants to improve.

That lack of creativity as proven costly over the second half of the season, and it's certainly something that the side will need to address moving forward.

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

This could be a very exciting deal.

There's no doubt that Tottenham Hotspur need to add some creativity to their midfield.

Since Christian Eriksen left the club they have looked short of ideas in attacking areas and that has certainly impacted results on the pitch.

With a poor Premier League finish on the cards, rectifying this issue has to be a priority.

While only 21, Nicolo Zaniolo could be the answer.

He's far from the finished article, but given Tottenham are unlikely to be playing in the Champions League next term they'll need to be buying players who have potential rather than those who are the finished article.

If Zaniolo can show exactly what he's capable of, then a fee of £50m over several years could be a good addition.

However with limited experience to his name there's no doubt that it would represent something of a gamble in the short term.
