Lionel Messi probably won't remember the 2019/20 La Liga season too fondly.

Despite the Argentine enjoying yet another prolific campaign in front of goal, the Blaugrana surrendered their La Liga crown to eternal rivals Real Madrid.

It's a situation that has left Messi visibly frustrated, with the usually calm 33-year-old lashing out at his Barcelona teammates in an interview following the 2-1 home loss to Osasuna.

But despite the Catalan club's struggles, Messi managed to set a new La Liga record for most assists in a single season with 21.

We all know Messi isn't one to care about individual accolades, but everyone else has rightly praised his ridiculous creative output in 2019/20.

Messi in action

So to celebrate one of the greatest playmaking campaigns in football history, we've attempted to rank Messi's 10 best assists of the season.

You can watch all 21 in the video below, followed by our top 10 (the time of each assist in the video has also been included).

10. Ansu Fati vs Levante (1:57)

A trademark Messi dribble into the box, followed by unrivalled composure to casually pass the ball to Fati in space. The teenage sensation's finish wasn't bad either.

9. Antoine Griezmann vs Getafe (3:08)

At first glance, you may mistake this assist for a simple through ball. But after watching the replay, you realise it's pure genius. Messi's deft pass not only put Griezmann one-on-one with the 'keeper, it nutmegged the poor defender in front of him - glorious.

8. Jordi Alba vs Mallorca (3:47)

Anyone who has ever tried to play football knows how hard it is to execute a first-time pass. But it looks as easy as tying a shoelace for Messi, with the Argentine nonchalantly lofting the ball into his teammate.

7. Antoine Griezmann vs Villarreal (5:07)

This was one of the most beautiful goals scored this season. Messi isn't normally one for back-heels, but he executed the skill to perfection against Villarreal and Griezmann's finish was top drawer. A goal you could watch on repeat for hours.

6. Ansu Fati vs Levante (1:30)

Passing at its very, very best. There's a reason why many believe Messi is the best of all time in the department and his daisy-cutter to Fati couldn't have been weighted any better. What a dream the Argentine must be to play with.

5. Luis Suarez vs Real Valladolid (0:52)

The phrase 'through the eye of a needle' springs to mind here. How Messi managed to deliver an inch-perfect ball to his partner-in-crime through a crowd of defenders is beyond us mere mortals, but it's become the norm for the 33-year-old.

4. Frenkie de Jong vs Real Betis (2:19)

One of Messi's trademark passes is the precise dink into the path of an onrushing teammate and it was executed to perfection here. De Jong's control on his chest and finish make the whole goal a thing of beauty.

3. Luis Suarez vs Villarreal (4:45)

Talking of trademark Messi, this assist perhaps personifies the diminutive Argentine more than any other. He tore Villarreal apart with a mazy dribble from the halfway line, before casually handing over to Suarez who finished with aplomb.

2. Luis Suarez vs Celta Vigo (4:19)

With two players on either post, Messi had to think outside the box when he lined up a free-kick against Celta 'in his range'. So instead of trying to caress the ball into the top corner, he found Suarez in space for the Uruguayan to emphatically nod home. Ingenuity at its finest.

1. Arturo Vidal vs Real Valladolid (0:33)

This makes the lofted pass to De Jong look bang average. How Messi spotted the run of Vidal is one thing, but to guide the ball a matter of inches over the defender's head and onto the Chilean's boot is another thing entirely.

Has any footballer ever routinely made the seemingly impossible look so, so easy?!
