Lionel Messi has enjoyed a brilliant individual season even if Barcelona haven't enjoyed a brilliant season as a team.

The Blaugrana came up short against their eternal rivals Real Madrid in La Liga, were knocked out of the Copa del Rey and their Champions League future hangs in the balance against Napoli.

So, you'd find it understandable if Messi had gone off the boil amid Barcelona's struggles, but he's instead continued to prove himself as one of the world's best players at 33 years old.

Messi's 2019/20 season

Messi asserted his authority as the most prolific goalscorer in La Liga with two strikes on the final day of the season against Alaves to oust title-winning rival Karim Benzema.

It was certainly a more cathartic way to round off the domestic campaign after a home defeat against Osasuna, albeit featuring a superb Messi free-kick, handed the title to Real.

And even though Messi could still augment his achievements when European football resumes, the Argentine has still achieved so many records and feats during the 2019/20 campaign.

Record-breaking season for Messi

In fact, they'll be plenty of Barcelona fans that will have greeted the news of the postponement of the Ballon d'Or as a potential lost opportunity for Messi to have moved to seven trophies.

However, the absence of a Ballon d'Or aside, we can't help wishing Messi an enjoyable few weeks off by reflecting on the 11 impressive records that he's ticked off as the season has gone on.

You can check out the remarkable statistics, compiled by The Sun, down below to see why Barca's plight by no means shows that Messi has experienced a season to forget.

1. Record seventh Pichichi trophy

Pulling clear of Benzema's tally was enough for Messi to surpass the six Pichichi trophies that Athletic Bilbao legend Telmo Zarra amassed in the 1940s and 1950s.

2. Most assists in a single La Liga season (21)

Has his goal-scoring declined this season? Yes. Has he applied that brilliance elsewhere? You bet.

3. First La Liga player with 20 goals and 20 assists in one season

It's a feat only matched elsewhere by Thierry Henry in the Premier League during the 2002/03 campaign where the Arsenal man also fell short of the league title.

4. Most individual Player of the Month awards

With seven plaques, Messi should trade in these awards for an entire Player of the Half-Year gong.

5. First La Liga player with 12 consecutive 20-goal seasons

Football clubs around the world can live or die by whether they have a 20-goal-a-season striker, but imagine the same star achieving it 12 times in a row... and just in the league.

6. First footballer to reach 1,000 goal contributions

Sure, it looks as though Cristiano Ronaldo will be the first to surpass Pele's world-record goal-scoring record, but the Portuguese will never strike the goals/assists balance that Messi has.

7. First player in Spanish football history to 500 wins

Falling short of the La Liga title doesn't make Messi any less of a born winner.

8. Most hat-tricks in La Liga history (36)

Sorry, Cristiano, but your old record of 34 from your Real Madrid days has been erased from the history books.

9. Most El Clasico appearances by a Barcelona player (43)

Most Barca goals in El Clasico? Check. Most Barca outings in El Clasico? Check.

10. First player to score in 15 successive Champions League seasons

We'll let you decide whether this gives Messi any extra bargaining chips in the debate with Ronaldo as the Champions League's greatest ever player.

11. Most teams scored against in Champions League history (34)

Dito. Though, it certainly fits the narrative of Ronaldo fans saying that Messi scores far more often in the group stages than he can ever manage in the biggest games.

GIVEMESPORT's Kobe Tong says

So... is this enough to think Messi should have won the Ballon d'Or? Not for me.

Sadly, some of the records on display here - Messi topping Ronaldo's hat-trick record, for example - are more a result of Messi's longevity in Spanish football as opposed to 2019/20 being so incredible.

Besides, his tally of 25 goals in the league is his lowest for more than a decade, though it goes without saying that Messi's biggest achievement this season has been his stunning playmaking.

But that's not enough to move him above Robert Lewandowski as far as I'm concerned.

Frankly, the Bayern striker has been robbed of a trophy that his named written all over it after scoring a mind-blowing 51 goals in just 43 games. That alone tops those 11 records - sorry, Lionel.
