Liverpool have finally lifted the Premier League trophy.After 30 years, the Reds are champions of England again and on Wednesday night, they got their hands on the trophy they sealed weeks ago.They may not have been able to do it in front of fans but the club ensured it was a very special occasion.The players did their best to make sure the party was even better after beating Chelsea 5-3.Jurgen Klopp’s side raced into a three-nil lead thanks to goals from Naby Keita, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Gini Wijnaldum.
Olivier Giroud pulled one back for the away side who only needed a point to secure Champions League qualification.Roberto Firmino’s first Premier League goal at Anfield in the second half made it 4-1 and looked to have sealed the three points.But the introduction of Christian Pulisic changed the game with the American producing an incredible assist for Tammy Abraham as he beat three defenders before putting it on a plate for his teammate.Minutes later, he turned and smashed in a goal of his own to make it 4-3.
But this was Liverpool’s night and nobody was going to spoil their party.Brilliant work from Andy Robertson saw his cross converted by substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.Now it was party time.Fireworks were going off outside the stadium and shortly after the final whistle, fireworks were going off inside the stadium and Jordan Henderson performed his traditional shuffle and lifted the trophy above his head as the Liverpool squad gathered on a podium in the Kop.
Scenes.For those watching the UK and tuning into Sky Sports, they would have listened to commentator Martin Tyler narrate Henderson’s trophy lift.However, alternative commentary has emerged in the form of Peter Drury.And it's quite brilliant.
As Henderson collected the trophy and held it aloft, Drury said: “The longest wait. A generation on and more. For the 19th time in their history, for the first time in the Premier League in the never to be forgotten year of 2020, the champions of England again, at last, are Liverpool. And right now, they are the champions of the world, they are the champions of Europe and they are the champions of their own land.”
