Jordan Henderson was named the Football Writers’ Association Men’s Footballer of the Year on Friday morning. The Liverpool captain received more than a quarter of the votes, fending off competition from teammates Virgil van Dijk and Sadio Mane, plus Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne and Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford.Henderson was grateful to receive the award but said it was the result of a team, rather than individual, effort."As grateful as I am I don't feel like I can accept this on my own," the 30-year-old said."I owe a lot to so many people but none more so than my current team-mates, who have been incredible and deserve this every bit as much as I do."He added: "I accept [the award] on behalf of this whole squad, because without them I'm not in a position to be receiving this honour. These lads have made me a better player - a better leader and a better person.”

Henderson was also congratulated by manager Jurgen Klopp, who recorded the following video message for the Reds’ skipper…

However, not everyone was happy for Henderson.

One Man City fan, incensed by the decision, called talkSPORT to complain that De Bruyne had been robbed.

“I’m absolutely flabbergasted. I really am flabbergasted,” Jackie said.

“At the end of the day, Kevin De Bruyne has got 19 assists this season. If he gets one more on Sunday, he’s equalled Thierry Henry.

“We won the treble last year and he got nothing.

“I’m not being rude, critical or nasty but Jordan Henderson, come on, he is not fit to lace the left foot of Kevin De Bruyne, never mind win Player of the Year!”

Jim White intervened at this point, saying: “That’s not on. That’s over the top, surely?”

Jackie hit back: “No it isn’t, Jim! No it isn’t! It’s because it’s Liverpool and they won the title by 18 points… what about all the records City have broken in the past two years? I’m so annoyed.”

When told that surely she should feel pleased for Henderson, Jackie added: I’m not, no. I’m really not.

“They’re saying what he does off the field. At the end of the day, it should be [based] on what’s done on the field, Jim.”

If you went purely by stats alone, there should have only been one winner.

De Bruyne’s tally of 11 goals and 19 assists dwarfs Henderson’s return of four goals and five assists.

But football is a team sport and Henderson has led Liverpool, this season’s Premier League champions, by example.

As the Reds’ talismanic captain - the man who’s inspired his teammates when the chips were down - Henderson fully deserves his award this season.
