The Premier League has witnessed some incredible midfielders over the year.

Roy Keane, Patrick Vieira, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Kevin De Bruyne… the list goes on.

It’s been an embarrassment of riches - and we’re not complaining.

It seems that we’ve passed a golden age of great central midfielders, with Manchester City’s De Bruyne performing pretty much unrivalled when it comes to the best in the top flight.

Jordan Henderson has enjoyed a superb season for Liverpool, while Bruno Fernandes has reinvigorated Manchester United, but we’re still not ready to put anyone in De Bruyne’s league.

That wasn’t the case in the 2000s, when the likes of Keane, Vieira, Gerrard, Lampard, Paul Scholes and Cesc Fabregas were around.

Now, a fan on Twitter has commemorated the Premier League’s greatest midfielders by making a compilation video that stretches to nearly seven minutes.

It includes highlights of six phenomenal players - Fabregas, Gerrard, Scholes, Vieira, Lampard and Yaya Toure.

So sit back and enjoy some sublime football.

What a treat.

All six players are up there not just in the list of fine midfielders, but in the best players to ever feature in the top flight.

Fabregas won two Premier League titles with Chelsea and the FA Cup with Arsenal.

Gerrard, meanwhile, inspired Liverpool to glory throughout his time with the Reds.

Scholes was a master in Sir Alex Ferguson’s midfield at Manchester United while Arsenal, to this day, haven’t replaced Vieira.

Lampard scored 177 league goals from midfield and Toure’s 2013/14 season, in which he scored 20 goals and assisted nine, is iconic.

Who’s the best of the lot? Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish was recently asked and he went with a different player.

The 24-year-old picked his top 10 Premier League midfielders in history and he put former Man United star Cristiano Ronaldo at No.1.

“I know he’s gone on to be a striker but when he was in the Premier League, he was a midfielder,” Grealish told BT Sport.

“It’s a toss-up between him and Messi to be the best player in the world. His goal record in the Premier League was just scary.”

Of the midfielders featured in the video, Grealish had Gerrard as his first choice.

“Him and JT are the two best captains in the Premier League,” Grealish said.

“He scored so many banging goals and I think in the prime of his career, he had everything.”
