Cristiano Ronaldo vs Lionel Messi always has football fans debating at the end of every season.

While there's still a few weeks before the mercurial pair continue their Champions League campaigns, there's a real feeling that the curtains are closing on the 2019/20 campaign.

Messi has suffered a tough campaign at Barcelona after being knocked out of the Copa del Rey, losing the La Liga title to Real Madrid and facing an uphill battle against Napoli in Europe.

Ronaldo vs Messi internationally

Meanwhile, things haven't been plain sailing for Ronaldo either with Juventus losing the Coppa Italia final on penalties, though everything points towards them winning a ninth consecutive Scudetto.

But the Ronaldo vs Messi narrative has actually concerned international football in the last few days with a viral Twitter thread arguing that Messi has had a better career representing his country.

It's a controversial statement, right? Nobody is claiming that Messi has been woeful for Argentina or anything, far from it, but it's well publicised that he's never won a major international trophy.

Ronaldo fan fights back on Twitter

Nevertheless, the thread - which can be viewed in its entirety here - broke down individual stats such as favourite opponents, tournament awards and average match ratings to fight Messi's argument.

It would be fair to say that Ronaldo fans weren't too happy with it, though, and one of them has even gone as far as creating a rival Twitter thread to fight the opposite argument.

Astonishingly, it's received just as much support as the original Messi thread with 5,700 'likes' and 1,000 retweets showing clear support for Twitter user @GreatWhite_9 at the time of writing.

Twitter thread defending Ronaldo

But what makes the thread truly unique is that they've managed to get their point across without writing a single word; merely using images to make the point that Ronaldo is number one.

And from bringing back memories of Messi misses, comparing Portugal and Argentina's starting XIs and highlighting Ronaldo's silverware, you've got to admit that it does a pretty good job.

Don't just take our word for it, though - check out the full Twitter thread down below:

GIVEMESPORT's Kobe Tong says

I'll be the first person to admit that I think Messi is the greatest footballer of all time. Guilty as charged.

But even I've got to concede that Ronaldo has enjoyed the better international career and yes, that does largely come down to the fact that he's achieved what Messi hasn't: winning a major title.

It's easy to point out that Ronaldo was largely sidelined for the Euro 2016 final, but that doesn't mean he didn't enjoy a fantastic tournament with standout displays against Hungary and Wales.

Besides, Messi lost three finals in three years by contrast, the first of which saw him miss a major chance at goal and the third of which saw him bungle his penalty in the shootout.

Plus, everything points towards Ronaldo breaking the international goal-scoring record, boasting a record of 99 strikes that dwarfs the 70 accumulated by Messi in South America.

Does that mean I think Messi has had a poor international career? Nope. Does this mean I think Ronaldo is the GOAT? Nope. But silverware talks in this particular area of the debate.
