Leeds United make formal offer for Man United and Arsenal target

Leeds United have waited 16 years for this moment.

Since dropping out of the Premier League in 2004 the Whites have been through the ringer as they tried to get back to the promised land.

Now that they've managed it, the focus has to be on staying there.

Marcelo Bielsa has really changed the landscape at Elland Road since arriving at the club and he'll be absolutely massive in retaining their Premier League status.

Working closely with Victor Orta, Bielsa will have a good idea what sort of players they'll be looking at this summer, and that'll mean that a list of potential targets will no doubt have already been compiled for a busy few months ahead.

While several positions are being targeted, one of the key areas to improve is in attack.

Uncertainty surrounds the future of Jean-Kevin Augustin who is said to have an obligation to join the club permanently after his loan spell, but given his lack of game time it's yet to be decided whether that move will happen.

That means that a new striker will be needed, with Jonathan David one player linked.

According to reports in Belgium, Leeds have already submitted a big-money move for the 20-year-old, who plays predominantly as a shadow striker.

David's current club Gent are already said to have rejected an offer in the region of £23million from French side Lille, while Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool have also previously been linked.

But while interest could still come from elsewhere, Gent chairman Ivan De Witte says that Leeds have come in with a 'much better' proposal than last week's offer from Lille.

Speaking to Belgian publication De Zondag, De Witte said: "I have only expressed my annoyance that contacts have been made with Lille behind our back

"There were no contacts last week, but that they have made a transfer impossible because of that is a bridge too far.

"The contacts were stopped this week, but other clubs are still interested. With much better proposals even. Including Leeds."

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

What a coup this would be.

Jonathan David is very highly rated by the Belgian side and it's no surprise to see him linked with a number of England's top sides.

However a move to Leeds United could be ideal.

A player of David's quality would be almost guaranteed a starting spot at Elland Road, and given the club's need for another attacking option, he could be just the ticket.

While a move would not be cheap, at 20 years of age there's significant sell-on potential, and given his growing standing in the game, there's every chance that this could be a shrewd investment.

It just remains to be seen whether they can see off the interest from elsewhere.
