Arsenal get revenge on Troy Deeney as they relegate Watford with 3-2 win

Troy Deeney isn’t exactly a fan favourite amongst Arsenal fans for his comments three years ago.

Following Watford’s 2-1 victory against the Gunners at Vicarage Road in October 2017, Deeney accused Arsenal of lacking “cojones.”

The striker entered the BT Sport studio and was probably a bit too honest about the north London club.

“I’m not going to be one to tell Mr (Arsene) Wenger about himself, but there’s a reason that they lost and it wasn’t because of one penalty,” Deeney said.

“I have to watch what I say, but it’s (having) a bit of cojones, is what I’ll say. Whenever I play against Arsenal, I’ll go up and think ‘let me whack the first one and see who wants it.”

Those comments came back to haunt him one year later as he was sent off in the same fixture for elbowing Lucas Torreira in the 11th minute.

But now, Arsenal fans will consider revenge very much served.

Their loss to Aston Villa last week put Watford into the relegation zone ahead of the final day of the season.

And of course, Deeney’s Watford would be coming up against Arsenal as they attempt to preserve their Premier League status.

There was a chance Mikel Arteta’s side would have one eye on their FA Cup final next week but they certainly showed “cojones” to race into a three-goal lead thanks to two goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubamayang and a Kieran Tierney strike.

Deeney himself did pull a goal back from the penalty spot before half-time to give the Hornets hope.

And with relegation staring them in the fact, they did actually show some "cojones" to make it 3-2 in the second half with ex-Arsenal man Danny Welbeck scoring.

But it wasn't to be for Watford and Deeney as they finished 19th following Bournemouth's victory over Everton, who will also be playing Championship football next season.

As for Arsenal, they went into 8th and will now be concentrating on next week's FA Cup final. Well, Arteta and the players will be, the fans were too busy mocking Deeney on social media. Check out some of the best reaction:
