Real Madrid have confirmed Mariano Diaz has tested positive for coronavirus ahead of his side's Champions League fixture with Manchester City.

The striker returned to the La Liga club following his holiday and went straight into isolation when he tested positive on Monday.

He hasn't trained with his Los Blancos teammates and will remain at home during the quarantine period.

That means he will miss Real Madrid's return fixture against Man City at the Eithad on Friday, August 7.

A statement from the Spanish club reads:

"After the COVID-19 tests carried out individually on our first-team football squad yesterday by the Real Madrid Medical Services, our player Mariano has given a positive result.

"The player is in perfect health and complying with the sanitary isolation protocol at home."

Diaz is now in isolation

Some reports in Spain are now suggesting that Madrid's Champions League fixture with Man City could be in doubt, following Mariano's positive coronavirus test.

However, with the player now in isolation, Los Blancos will continue their preparation for the tie and GOAL reports the club are hoping it still goes ahead.

Quarantine protocols have been put in place for those arriving in Britain from Spain, however the La Liga champions have been granted exemption from those regulations.

Therefore, there is no need for them to isolate for 14 days once entering the UK.

Mariano has featured irregularly for Real

It's unlikely Mariano would have featured heavily in Zinedine Zidane's plans for Man City, even if he was included in the squad.

The forward has played just seven times over the course of the season, scoring just one goal.

Since the restart, he's only made three appearances - all of them coming off the bench. But regardless of if he was in Zidane's plans or not, we wish Mariano a quick recovery.
