Manchester United are set for a pivotal summer.

After securing a spot in the top four of the Premier League this term, attention now switches to preparing for the new campaign.

It's going to be a quick turnaround, and United need to be ready.

With Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea all likely to strengthen this summer, it's up to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to move the Red Devils forward as they push towards a title challenge.

United's recruitment over the last 12 months has been a marked improvement on what went on before, with the likes of Aaron Wan Bissaka, Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes coming in.

All three are players with the right attitude to succeed at Manchester United, and it's likely that this is something that Ed Woodward and co. will be looking at again.

The club's main target this summer is Jadon Sancho who has been linked with a £100million move from Borussia Dortmund.

But with funds likely to be limited due to the impact of COVID-19, it may be the case that United need to sell before they can buy.

Several players will be contenders to move on to fund a deal, so let's take a look at some of those who could face the chop.

Sergio Romero

The goalkeeper faces an uncertain future at Old Trafford.

With David De Gea and Dean Henderson likely to battle for the number one jersey next term, the 33-year-old could be deemed surplus to requirements.

Everton and Leeds United have both been linked with a move, something which is bound to be appealing as he seeks more regular first team opportunities.

Phil Jones

The writing is certainly on the wall for the defender.

At 28 years of age, Jones needs to be playing regular first team football - something that he's certainly more than capable of doing in the Premier League.

With just eight appearances to his name in all competitions this term, it seems that his chance to impress at Old Trafford has passed.

Chris Smalling

After being shipped out on loan to Roma last summer, it seemed that his days in Manchester were numbered.

But after an impressive campaign he could yet force his way into United's plans.

The 30-year-old is bound to attract interest this summer, and so it could be an ideal opportunity for Solskjaer to cash in.

Jesse Lingard

Another player who has found first team opportunities hard to come by.

The 27-year-old has described just how hard the current campaign has been 'as a player and a person', with the midfielder starting just nine games all season.

Lingard could be handed a fresh start, with Newcastle United and Roma tipped as possible destinations for the sprightly England international.

Alexis Sanchez

His time at Old Trafford has been far from successful, but thankfully Alexis Sanchez finally be on the move.

Inter Milan are reportedly keen to sign him permanently after impressing during his loan spell, where he scored four and created 10 in 28 appearances.

Providing an agreement can be reached over his astronomical wages, it won't be a surprise to see him shipped on.
