To put it bluntly, Arsenal's season was a mess.
Unai Emery turned the Gunners into a side who were only capable of achieving draws before the club exited the Europa League under Mikel Arteta.
The Spaniard may have improved the feel around the club but there is still some considerable work to do - Arsenal did finish eighth after all.
Victory in the FA Cup final on Saturday evening would finally give the supporters something to cheer about, and like the Europa League last term, a great deal hinges on winning.
Once more, the Gunners face Chelsea in a bid to secure European football. In 2018/19, it was for a place in the Champions League. On this occasion, it's for a place in the Europa.
Whether they secure their participation in that competition will depend on how much money they have to spend this summer. The club are already facing a decrease in revenue following a further season out of the continent's premier competition and if they are to ever get back among the elite, money is needed.
Stan Kroenke has been reluctant to invest and as a result, the north Londoners have been left behind in the market.
Arteta issued a rallying cry after the win against Liverpool calling for money to be spent and then a matter of days later, the aeroplane banners were back out again. This time, it read: "Back Arteta, Kroenke out."
From an Arsenal perspective, it's hard to disagree with that sentiment.
Plans will already be drawn up by Raul Sanllehi and Edu but not qualifying for Europe could put a number of targets on the backburner. Irrespective of that, one player they're in the market for is Wilfried Zaha.
Though, one year on from pursuing the Ivorian initially, should the Islington side be targeting him? Arguably not.
Here are five reasons why Zaha would be a poor signing...
The price tag
For starters, spending the required sum of money to lure the winger to the Emirates Stadium would be incredibly poor business.
Zaha was valued at around £80m by the Eagles last summer when they reportedly rejected a cash plus player swap deal for the Ivory Coast international.
Claims in May suggested he was now worth around the £60m mark but even then, he is too pricey for Arsenal. It's no secret just how little funds they'll have to spend in the summer and if they do pay out large sums, it needs to be on the defence.
His numbers
Zaha bagged ten goals and created a further five in the Premier League last campaign but this term, he only produced a measly four strikes in comparison.
Unable to replicate the form he was once capable of, it should be a concern for a club of Arsenal's size if they invested in such an inconsistent individual.
Capable of providing magic on his day, amassing 4.3 dribbles per game, he simply doesn't create enough to warrant a big move.
Emery and Arteta's main problem, barring the defence, has been creativity. The Gunners sit 11th for key passes made in the Premier League this season but Zaha conjures up just 0.9 a game - he'd be little improvement.
Flopped at United
It was a while ago now but Zaha doesn't have a particularly good track record when playing at a higher level.
Of course, the tricky speedster is now in his prime but his record for Manchester United speaks for itself.
The Ivorian managed just four outings and failed to find the back of the net.
Perhaps the winger prefers to be a big fish in a small pond? We'll only ever really find out if he leaves Palace behind for a larger club.
Hale End
Perhaps the biggest reason of all is the young players coming through at the club. Bukayo Saka has been unearthed from the Hale End academy and has been a breath of fresh air, earning a new long-term contract and being handed the number 7 shirt.
Competition on the left-hand side is pretty fierce with Sead Kolasinac and Kieran Tierney vying for spots at left-wing back, while on top of that, it's an area where Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Gabriel Martinelli have operated too.
However, let's not forget the likes of Reiss Nelson and Joe Willock. The former has come into form at the back end of the campaign, scoring against Liverpool, while the latter has been regularly used a substitute out wide.
Arsenal need solutions quickly but it's important to consider the happiness of some of their rising stars. Signing Zaha would surely prevent Saka from achieving too many regular starts.
AFCON
The final reason is a small one but it would be far from ideal if the wide man was having to leave for a month halfway through the season.
Arsenal already have Nicolas Pepe and Aubameyang who could potentially depart to the Africa Cup of Nations next January and if all of a sudden Arteta's front three ups sticks for four weeks, it would be rather damaging.
That would leave the Gunners with a shortage of players and also with a lack of quality. For the time being, the head coach needs people he can rely on all year long.
Add all of the above to the fact he'd cost around £60m and the Islington outfit would surely be wasting their money.
They need to forget about Zaha.
