Kevin De Bruyne has been voted Premier League Player of the Year in a BBC Sport poll.Fans have spent the day voting for the star performer in 2019/20, but it was De Bruyne who prevailed ahead of Jordan Henderson and Sadio Mane.De Bruyne collected 45% of the vote to claim the award ahead of the Liverpool duo.De Bruyne was masterful for Man City, who finished second in the table. He tied Thierry Henry's record for most assists in a single Premier League campaign with 20, and was head and shoulders above any other player in the top flight. The shortlist for the award featured:

  • Jordan Henderson (Liverpool)
  • Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool)
  • Sadio Mane (Liverpool)
  • Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City)

Henderson’s story is an incredible one. He faced serious doubts when he joined Liverpool in 2011, with Brendan Rodgers trying to offload him to Fulham.

But the midfielder ignored the critics and became one of the most important players in Jurgen Klopp’s title-winning squad.

“Henderson defines Liverpool as a club with his heart and determination - he has achieved against all the odds and proved all the critics wrong,” former Premier League goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer said about the Liverpool skipper.

Another of those key performers was Van Dijk, who has perhaps had the biggest impact at Anfield since his arrival in 2018.

Indeed, BBC Sport pundit Mark Lawrenson believes Man City would have won the league if they had Van Dijk.

His £75 million fee now looks like a bargain.

Mane enjoyed another prolific season, scoring 18 goals in the league.

“There have been so many occasions where Sadio has been the game-changer, and the match-winner, not just with his goals but also by creating chances and problems for the opposition,” Danny Murphy said about the Senegalese forward, per BBC Sport.

The three Liverpool stars were joined on the shortlist by De Bruyne, who was unfortunate to be on the side that finished runners-up.

The Belgian midfielder was spectacular, tying Thierry Henry’s Premier League record with 20 assists, and got Jermaine Jenas’ vote.

“De Bruyne has been head and shoulders above any other player in the league, with the consistency of his performances, how dangerous he is and how he dictates games with his quality,” Jenas said.
