Jesse Lingard has received more than his fair share of stick, criticism and abuse in recent years.

The Manchester United midfielder, by his own admission, has struggled to produce his best form over the past couple of seasons.

Lingard, who will turn 28 at the end of the year, scored a career-best 13 goals in 48 games under Jose Mourinho during the 2017-18 campaign and was in the process of cementing his status as one of the first names on the teamsheet at Old Trafford.

But the 2018-19 season was disappointing for Lingard, who only managed to score five goals in 36 matches.

And things failed to improve for the England international this season. In 38 appearances, he scored just three goals. He also failed to score or register a single Premier League assist until he netted in the final seconds of United’s 2-0 win over Leicester City on the final day of the season.

After receiving so much hate on social media, Lingard bravely spoke up about the various personal issues he’s been facing off the pitch in recent times.

He revealed in December that he’s assumed responsibility for his younger siblings after his mother fell ill.

And earlier this week, he posted an honest statement on Instagram, conceding he’d lost “who I was as a player and person”.

“Im starting with the man in the mirror im asking him to change his ways,” Lingard wrote.

“This season has been difficult for so many reasons. I lost who I was as a player and person, but I never wanted to give up, I knew who I really was on and off the pitch and knew that having been there before I could get there again.

“This meant working harder than I’d ever done before and trusting in those around me that they knew how to best help me achieve that. I know the fans have been frustrated but in all this time my love for this club and everyone connected to it has never left me.

“This team, this club is my family and I will continue to keep working harder than ever to help this team achieve its goals.”

Meanwhile, a video titled ‘Jesse Lingard - Fix You’ is going viral on social media.

To the tune of Coldplay’s ‘Fix You’, it begins with the words “if you try your best but you don’t succeed,” alongside a clip of the midfielder chipping over the bar against Watford.

It then builds up to some of Lingard’s best moments in a United shirt, culminating in *that* brilliant FA Cup final goal against Crystal Palace in 2016.

United fans have found themselves getting surprisingly emotional by the footage. Here’s some of the best reaction…

It would be fantastic if Lingard can rediscover his form and confidence at Old Trafford.

Everyone knows there’s a proper player there, but the past couple of years have been tough for him both on and off the pitch.

If Lingard has played his final game for United, he deserves to leave with the best wishes of everyone connected to the club, including the fans.
