This is the season that Steven Gerrard could really establish himself as a Rangers FC legend.

After falling short in the Scottish Premiership title race last term, the Gers have high hopes of pushing their rivals all the way this time around.

However that will be easier said than done, with Celtic enjoying an unprecedented spell of dominance.

Last year's title win made it nine on the bounce for the Bhoys, who are dreaming of one more to cap off a decade at the top of the Scottish game.

Such an achievement would be massive for Celtic, but an incredibly bitter pill to swallow for Rangers FC.

There's nothing that supporters at Ibrox would love more than to stop their rivals from enjoying that success, and that's why this summer is so important.

A huge part of Rangers' title hopes hinge on the future of Alfredo Morelos.

The Colombian has been heavily linked with a move away this summer, with a big-money switch to Lille being tipped as the most likely destination.

While this move is not yet complete, fans will be hoping for it to happen sooner rather later to give them the best chance of bringing in a replacement.

Strikers such as Ivan Toney and Kemar Roofe have been linked, but according to former Scotland defender Alan Hutton, a deal for the striker should only be done if the fee meets Rangers' valuation.

Speaking to Football Insider, Hutton said: “If you’ve got a player that doesn’t want to be there and you’re going to make a massive profit and you’re able to reinvest in the squad, it’s absolutely ideal.

“Rangers will get to use that money and obviously they’ll need to bring in a striker, that will be their main target and then they can strengthen in all areas if need be.

“I think as long as the fee is fair – clubs nowadays aren’t silly, they’re not going to overpay really, in this market, so if they find the fee to be fair then I’m sure they’ll have the money to spend.

“I can’t imagine Rangers want a payment plan over X amount of years, they’ll want it up front so they can reinvest it in their own squad so it’s an ideal situation to get that money they’re looking for.”

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

With Alfredo Morelos attracting plenty of attention, it seems likely that Rangers FC could be about to land a hefty transfer fee.

That said, Alan Hutton's verdict on how a deal should be structured is valid.

If Steven Gerrard is looking to reinvest in his squad he will need money to be immediately available to do so.

That way they can splash out on a new striker to replace Morelos, while also targeting other positions.

Structuring a deal with instalments, bonuses and add-ons might be beneficial in the long run, but they will leave the Glaswegian side with a tough task as they look to close the gap on Celtic.

It's crucial for Rangers to challenge for the title this term and that's why the club must be make as much money available for transfers as possible.
